1.5-liter Toyota 1NZ-FE engine. This engine is installed on compact models and is equipped with VVT-i phase control only on the intake. The design of the unit is similar to its larger counterpart with the index 1ZZFE, the difference being an aluminum cylinder block with cast-iron liners and an open cooling jacket, aluminum 16-valve head, timing chain drive and phase control valve type VVT-i on the intake. The first version had no hydro-compensators and the valves required periodic adjustments.
In 2003, an updated version of this engine appeared, the so-called Type 03. The unit differed by having hydro-compensators, EGR valve and a hotter thermostat. In 2005, the Type 05 engine with ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System with Intelligence) was introduced. In 2010, the Type 10 unit debuted and featured an adaptation to stricter fuel economy.
